Crossing Ecotones

An overlapping zone, in ecology, is a transitional area between different ecosystems. A large biological area, such as a forest or an ocean, contains many ecotones, and each of which has its own unique species and is hence very different. The species living in an area can be competitors or enjoy a symbiotic relationship. Although urban expansion and industrialisation damage the ecosystem, a transitional area between two species, from the cultural perspective, allows different ethnic groups to mingle and learn from each other through languages, technologies and sharing of knowledge, and vibrant cultures can hence be born. "Crossing Ecotones" is a programme funded by National Culture and Arts Foundation. This cultural exchange programme includes two chapters, " Mountains Seen;No Mountain Being" and "Thousands of Fibres". Collaborating with ecologists, scientists, artists and cultural professionals, the programme takes audience along to travel through Tatun Volcano Group and the intertidal zone in the North Coast in northern Taiwan, as well as Yogyakarta in Java, Indonesia, and presents its findings across its site-specific projects, forums, exhibitions and performances. The result of this programme will be on display in exchange exhibitions held at National Taiwan University of Art's Yo-Chang Art Museum (New Taipei City) and The Sonobudoyo Museum (Yogyakarta) in 2023, and the final presentation will take place in 2024.
